Caught in a Lie: Melancon Endorsed by Senator Cravins and Representative Cravins,
Jr. HENDERSON
, LA : State Senator Don Cravins ( Opelousas ) proudly endorsed Charlie Melancon
for his re-election to Congress on Wednesday night. Cravins, whose district once
included parts of the 3rd District in St. Martin Parish, recently won election
as Mayor of Opelousas. State Senator Craig Romero
has been falsely touting Senator Cravins’s endorsement for months, but Cravins
set the record straight at a Melancon campaign rally in Henderson Wednesday night
that was attended by over 200 people. Senator Cravins referred to Congressman
Melancon’s help in securing needed highway funds for an overpass in Opelousas
as one of the reasons he supports Melancon. “When I needed help
for my area, even though it was outside Congressman Melancon’s district, he helped
us,” Senator Cravins said. “That speaks volumes about the type of person that
Charlie Melancon is.” “Don has been a good
friend since we served in the state legislature together and has been a great
public servant throughout his career,” Melancon said. “I am glad to have his support
in my campaign for re-election.” “The fact that Romero claimed that Senator and
Mayor-elect Cravins supported his campaign right up until last week just shows
how desperate the Romero campaign is.” Melancon spokesman Lewis
Lowe said. “At the same time that Congressman Melancon announced over 110 endorsements
from local officials, Romero stoops to lying about who supports him. That speaks
for itself.” Senator Cravins’s son,
Representative Don Cravins’s Jr., has also endorsed Melancon’s campaign. Representative
Cravins, Jr. will replace his father in the 24th Senate District as he was the
only candidate to qualify for the seat for the December special election. Both Senator and Representative
Cravins have signed affidavits of support for Congressman Melancon. Earlier this
week, Melancon announced his endorsements from elected officials around the 3rd
District.
