3RD DISTRICT

Charlie Melancon

Rep. Melancon's district was hit hard by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and he was quick to respond. In the first days after Katrina, Rep. Melancon amassed tractor trailers full of food and water for victims. His efforts to work through the Federal Emergency Management Agency were frustrating, though, and the goods sat on the Crescent City Connection for days waiting to be delivered.

After the storm Rep. Melancon put pressure on FEMA and other federal authorities to explain why the federal storm response was so clumsy. He has pushed for accountability at FEMA and was instrumental in getting e-mail correspondence by ex-FEMA director Michael Brown that showed just how out of touch he and the agency were in the aftermath of Katrina.

Rep. Melancon started working on the issue of oil revenue sharing and coastal restoration before the storm and pledges to continue pressing for Louisiana's fair share. During his first term, he has demonstrated a responsiveness to constituents and an easy ability to work with colleagues. He has proved to be a hands-on representative in his first term, and Louisiana would be well served if he returns for another.
