Melancon Hosts Community Dinner in Donaldsonville
DONALDSONVILLE , LA- Congressman Charlie Melancon hosted his sixth community dinner
in Donaldsonville on Tuesday night. The dinner, held at the Lemann Community center
, was a chance for Ascension, Northern Assumption, and East St. James residents
to meet and hear their Congressman talk about issues and answer questions from
the audience.
Over 75 people attended the event and were treated to jambalaya prepared by Gonzales
resident Joe Gautreaux. Congressman Melancon addressed some of the most important
issues facing the nation and South Louisiana . Topics discussed included fiscal
responsibility, immigration, the war in Iraq , offshore oil royalty legislation,
and the need to raise the minimum wage. For
too long now, our country has paid for wants rather than needs, and all we have
to show for it are huge deficits that we pass on too our kids and grandchildren,
Melancon said. It is my hope that in the next Congress, Republicans and Democrats
alike will work together to get this country back on the right financial track.
In his first term in office, Congressman Melancon has been an advocate for hurricane
victims and for restoring Louisiana s coast. He was instrumental in passing offshore
oil royalty sharing legislation, which could bring the state billions of dollars
to restore its coasts and prepare against future storms. ###-
