Week Later: Who is Romero Protecting? Napoleonville,
La.: Craig Romero still does not have enough information
to make a decision on his party leaders. Romero, after the urging of Congressman Melancon,
supported an investigation into the Mark
Foley case, but was careful not to call for a special investigator or prosecutor
to examine the cover-up perpetrated by Republican leadership. In
today’s Times Picayune, Romero claims he STILL doesn’t know enough to make judgment.
Romero said, “He’s not Foley's judge and jury and doesn't have enough information
to speak about the case.” [Times-Picayune Oct. 6, 2006] “It
has been a week since the country learned about Mark Foley’s actions, and my opponent
still doesn’t have enough information to know that there is a cover-up among his
leadership,” Melancon said. "My
opponent lists family values as one of his top campaign issues but won't take
a stand when the leadership of his party covers up for a member who sexually preyed
on children." Melancon added, "Romero can't make
a stand on an issue that everyone else in America
agrees on. Preying on children is abhorrent. How much more do
you need to know about this case to make a stand?" Could
it be that Romero does not want to criticize those that fund his campaign?
As of the last FEC filing deadline in August, Romero has received the following
contributions from Republican leadership: Speaker
Dennis Hastert (Keep Our Majority PAC):
$10,000 Majority Leader John
Boehner (The Freedom Project): $5,000 NRCC Chairman
Tom Reynolds (Together for Our Majority):
$5,000 Majority Whip Roy
Blunt (Rely on Your Beliefs): $5,000 The
National Republican Campaign Committee also used part of a $100,000 donation by
Mark Foley to conduct a poll for Senator Romero. How
much information does Romero need to make a decision on protecting children? Senator
Romero should return the funds he has received from these leaders immediately
or donate them to a worthy charity. For more
