Why did AOL get rid of their chat rooms?
A few years ago, AOL had real chat rooms where people could talk about real stuff in life.
be it; politics, sports, news, etc.
Now,
they got rid of all their real chat rooms and replaced them with junk.
These are AOL “instant messenger” chat rooms, where everyone is a sex bot.
Why did they do this?
Well, AOL was providing a service free of charge. Naturally, they did not spend a lot of money on maintaining it.
I approached AOL a few years ago with a licensing plan for the ad bots and a heavy enforcement scheme, which a few of us would do as independent contractors for half the revenue. Then sex bots would at least have to pay their way.
AOL was shortsighted enough not to be interested. They were unwilling to pay half of the revenue they will not now be getting to keep the rooms orderly and the bots limited. Naturally, since they were not developing the chat software any more, people discovered many cracks, and the bots continued to increase.
IRC is still habitable. So, very much, is SILC. I have not tried Yahoo Instant messenger in years, nor even with pidgin, so I cannot say whether they are getting to be the same. And I refuse to use windows because I don’t care to welcome crackers to my computers.
