In order to be culturally competent/aware in the “West” is it necessary to know about the Abrahamic traditions?
As someone aspiring to be a religion teacher, I’m interested in discovering how people feel about the IMPORTANCE of learning about Christianity/Judaism/Islam in order to be able to recognize basic references in art, literature, pop culture, politics, current events, etc. For instance the origin of the phrase “Adam’s apple”, or to understand the imagery in the opening sequence in “Desperate Housewives”, or the controversy in France concerning the hijab and all other religious symbols, etc. etc.
Culture and religion go hand in hand. Business is being conducted globally and people are relocating and traveling the world. If we are to be effective business people and if we want to function well in society we need to have a basic understanding of others cultures and thus their religion.
