Memo: 17 August 2005 To: Interested
Parties Fr: John Anzalone / Jeff Liszt Re: Summary of Polling Results
in Louisiana CD-3 Congressman Charlie Melancon has better name identification,
a higher favorable rating, and stronger vote support than 2004 challenger
Craig Romero. This is true not only in the 3rd Congressional District
as a whole, but within challenger Craig Romero?s home base of the
22nd State Senate district as well. ? Congressman Melancon receives
a 72% favorable / 9% unfavorable rating in the 22nd Senate district
(81% unaided name identification). Romero?s favorable rating is
14 points lower than Melancon?s, yet Romero still has a higher unfavorable
rating (58% favorable / 15% unfavorable). ?
Congressman Melancon receives
a 65% positive / 8% negative job rating in the 22nd district. His
ratio of positives to negatives (8:1) is very strong. ? A majority
of voters (58%) in the 22nd District say they would vote to re-elect
Charlie Melancon, while just 20% would vote for someone new. Melancon
is comfortably above the 50% threshold that generally marks a safe
incumbent.
Congressman Melancon leads challenger
Craig Romero by 24 points district-wide (51% to 27%), and even leads
within Romero's Senate district (40% Melancon / 37% Romero). When
voters receive very basic biographical information about Melancon
and Romero, Melancon's lead in the 22nd Senate District grows to
16 points (54% to 38%), even though this district should be Romero's
home base.
