Melancon hosts the first
of several community dinners in Houma
Houma, La.- Congressman Charlie
Melancon last night hosted the first of several community dinners
that he will be having around the 3rd district. The dinner, held
at the V.F.W. Post 3700 in Houma, was a chance for Terrebonne Parish
residents to meet and listen to the congressman talk about some
of the issues facing the residents of south Louisiana, including
coastal restoration and offshore oil revenues.
"America
has woken up and realized that we are not only the working coast,
but we provide energy and resources for the whole country," Melancon
said. "We should finally get our fair share of revenues from the
energy we produce."
In his first term, Melancon has
been an advocate for hurricane victims and has constantly fought
to bring relief money to the state. Most recently, the congressman
was instrumental in passing Outer Continental Shelf drilling legislation,
which could bring $9 billion to Louisiana to help the state restore
its vanishing coast.
More than 150 Houma-area residents
attended the dinner. Attendees were treated to home-cooked jambalaya,
salad, and bread. Topics discussed included social security, veterans'
affairs, small business loans and education.
